Open Air Cinema Brings Outdoor Movies to the Hills of Rwanda

Rwanda Film Center Outdoor Cinema

Eric Kabera — a Rwandan filmmaker whose documentary 100 Days about the Rwandan genocide influenced later works including Hotel Rwanda — founded the Rwanda Film Center in Kigali to train young Rwandans in filmmaking. Using an inflatable screen from Open Air Cinema, the center toured rural villages across the country, screening both domestic and international films to communities that had no permanent cinema.

Rwandan films had drawn critical attention at festivals including Tribeca, but Kabera’s aim was to bring them home — to the audiences in Rwanda itself.
