Outdoor Movies in Phoenix, Arizona

An outdoor movie night is a great way to get neighbors out of their apartments in the summer. With a little planning and shared effort, you can pull one off inexpensively.

  1. Get neighbors involved early. If you’re using a common area, check with building management first. Recruit a few helpers for planning and setup.
  2. Set the date and spread the word. Post notices in advance and pick the movie ahead of time. Family-rated films bring out the biggest crowd; if you go adult-only, say so on the flyer.
  3. Plan refreshments. A potluck works well — ask people to bring picnic baskets, chairs, and drinks. Movie-themed food adds fun: desserts for a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory screening, for example.
  4. Set up the “theater.” A DVD projector (borrowed from a friend or the office if you don’t own one) and a large white sheet hung on the side of a building is all you need. Don’t forget the DVDs.

A few extras that help: a rented tent for shade or light rain, an outdoor fireplace for atmosphere, bug control, and plenty of seating — blankets, pillows, chairs, or benches.
