Port Alberni, BC's Parks and Recreation Department hosted its first outdoor movie night on August 21, 2008 at Bob Dailey Stadium. A movie supply company brought in a theatre-sized inflatable screen with projection and sound. The inspiration came from coordinator Karen Freethy, who discovered outdoor movies on a family trip to Waikiki Beach years earlier and spent months searching for a supplier before one found her.

Events began at 7 p.m. with concessions, a bouncy tent, and kids' activities; the movie started at dusk (around 8:45 p.m.). Admission was free. Freethy anticipated 600--700 attendees, noting that nearby Powell River had drawn 2,500 to a similar event the year before. The film title was not announced in advance due to licensing rules.
